General InformationWireless Internet at the K.U.LeuvenWireless networks are gaining in popularity. The reason is that more and more users (personnel and students) own a portable computer or PDA with a wireless network card. Within the K.U.Leuven there is a growing demand for wireless Internet access, e.g. in classrooms, meeting rooms, conference rooms, libraries, etc.The broadcast nature of wireless networks introduces specific seurity concerns. The ICTS-council has approved guidelines for wireless network deployment. KULeuvenNet offers standard solutions that conform to these rules. For more information, contact KULeuvenNet. Pilot Project Wireless KotNetTo gain experience with the operational exploitation of wireless networks, and to obtain an idea of possibilities and user interest, KULeuvenNet has started a pilot project Wireless KotNet.Wireless KotNet is part of the KotNet Project, and offers students and personnel of the K.U.Leuven the opportunity to connect to the Internet at a number of public locations.
The Alma restaurants are perfect sites for this project, because they
are permanently accessible, centrally located and well-known.
At KULAK, there are also some hotspots:

Configuration
Wireless Network Card
Wireless KotNet requires a 802.11b compatible network card. With most of these cards, the standard configuration after installation will be sufficient to get access to the wireless network. If you need to provide an initial configuration, please use the following:
- SSID = campusnet or kotnet (beware : no capitals!)
- no WEP key
TCP/IP Configuration
The TCP/IP network configuration must be set to 'automatically obtain an ip address', the same as for a wired KotNet connection. Instructions can be found here.KotNet Login
As with a normal KotNet connection, only the LUDIT website is accessible without a login. For a complete Internet connection, you need to login with your intranet userid at https://netlogin.kuleuven.be/e_login.htmlWireless student room (kot)
More and more often private studenthouses are no longer wired. In stead they provide a wireless network. If the installation is configured correctly each student will get an IP-address in the range of 10.nnn.nnn.nnn.
Unfortunately we notice that in many of those installations a router is used. This is not allowed.
A router should only be used when there is one single user.
Nevertheless some routers can be configured as a wireless Hub. An example using a DI-524 can be found here.
