Windows 3.11 is a non-Plug-and-Play operating system, so never use a networkadapter in Plug-and-Play mode under Windows 3.11.
This involves a few more steps but saves you a lot of trouble afterwards.
Required software:
The drivers for your D-Link network card. If you did not receive a diskette with your card,
you can download these here for the D-Link DE220P network card.
Precautions
Go to MS-DOS.
At the DOS prompt, type 'MSD' and press enter.
Press 'Q' and you'll get a list of all the IRQ's in your computer.
Then check the IRQ numbers from 10 to 15. If you see one or more
'Reserved' or 'Handled by default handlers',
this means that you are free to use these IRQ's. You will have to use
one of these for your network card. Write it down.
Go back to DOS ('ESC' and 'F3').
Installation of the adapter
Put the floppy with the D-Link Networkdrivers (the floppy that came with the card) in the diskdrive.
If you didn't get the diskette with you, you can always download them here.
Next type 'a:\install'
In the menu, pick the option 'Setup' and 'Diagnostic Program'
The program will now ask you to give a directory to copy its files to. The best choice is
'c:\dlink\setup' because we will refer to it through this guide. If you wish to change any
settings of your network adapter afterwards, you can still use the setup program by typing
'c:\dlink\setup\setup.exe' from the DOS prompt.
Next press 'ENTER' or 'Y' to start the setup program right away.
Setup program of the DLINK-220P adapter
Choose 'SetUp configuration' and press 'Enter'.
Now you can adjust the settings of your network card. Just scroll to the option you want to change an
press 'enter', now select the right option and press 'enter' again. The following
configuration is advisable:
| Connector type | : | AUTO |
| IO Base adress | : | 300 of 280 |
| Interrupt Number | : | Your IRQ value from MSD |
| Plug & Play | : | Disabled |
| Full Duplex | : | Disabled |
| Remote Boot | : | Disabled |
Press F2 to save this configuration.
Now it's time to check if your card is working properly. Therefore, choose 'Adapter Basic
Diagnostics'. When the UTP-cable has been connected to your card, all tests should give Pass as
a test-result, except for the last one. It's quite normal that the last test fails. If you get more
Fail messages, there must be something wrong with the settings or the hardware. The former problem
can be solved by trying a few other settings. If none of these adjustments work, there will be something
wrong with the network card itself in most cases.
Installation D-Link Drivers
Insert the D-Link disk in drive A: and type 'a:\install' at the DOS-prompt.
Choose 'Customized Installation' from the menu and 'Windows For Workgroups V3.11'.
Again, you will be asked to indicate a directory for the drivers (choose 'c:\dlink').
All the necessary drivers will be copied to your hard disk. After the installation the program returns
to DOS.
Installation of your network card
Start windows, click on the 'main group' icon. Next double click 'windows setup';
'options'; 'change network settings'. You will see the next window:
Press the 'Networks...' button.
Select the option 'No additional Network' within 'Install Microsoft Windows
Network'. Then click the 'OK' button.
Now the 'Drivers...' button is available so that we can click this button.
Select 'Add Adapter...'.
Select 'Unlisted or Updated Network Adapter' and click 'OK'.
Choose 'c:\dlink' as your source directory and click 'OK'.
Select 'D-Link DE-22X ISA Ethernet Adapter' driver and click 'OK'.
Now you will be asked to insert the base I/O address of your card. This HAS to be the same
number as in the beginning of the installation (See Setup program
for the Dlink 220P Card). Click on 'OK.'
Then press 'Close'.
After you've pressed 'OK', Windows will ask for a User Name, Workgroup and Computer Name.
You can choose your name. It doesn't matter what you fill in here, as long as you fill in something.
Refer to 'c:\dlink' as your driver installation directory and click 'OK' to activate
the D-Link drivers.
Windows will also ask you for the installation disks of Windows to update your network environment.
Restarting the computer
If the next window has not yet appeared, always press 'OK'.
Press 'OK'
Then press 'Restart computer'
Now you can go to the
TCP/IP protocol configuration guide.
