All students and staff are oferred a fast connection to KULeuvenNet
by KULeuven LUDIT through the cable networks of UPC or Iverlek. This
configuration also provides access to Belnet and to the Internet. To
use this service, you need a cable modem; herefor you need to make a
subscription with the cable company. You also need to configure the
necessary software on your computer.
This offer is limited to a restricted geographical area.
The K.U.Leuven and UPC agreed to cooperate concerning the connection of
UPC's existing cable network
to the KULeuvenNet.
Students and members of personnel can get a high-speed connection to
KULeuvenNet at a reduced cost.
This connection is possible within
Leuven, Heverlee and Kessel-Lo.
This agreement fits in the KotNet project of the KULeuven.
Procedure UPC
To obtain a connection through UPC cable to the KULeuvenNet,
you can contact UPC (016/317.300).
You can find UPC at Tiensevest 58 Leuven. You have to ask for a
UPC-KotNet connection and sign an agreement. They will provide you with
a cable modem. KotNet 1 allows a connection for 1 computer,
KotNet Collectief allows up to 16 computers to connect to KotNet
Pricing (full fee payed at once):
- Kotnet 1 = € 199,- / academic year (01/10/2006 - 30/09/2007)
- Kotnet collectief = € 299,- / academic year (01/10/2006 - 30/09/2007)

IMPORTANT: there is a temporary stop for new connections due to capacity problems at Iverlek3/Telenet.

Connection scheme
1. Single Connection
The cable modem will be connected to the cablenet by a standard TV cable (TV coax 75 Ohm). To connect the cable modem to your PC, you need an Ethernet network adapter with a UTP connector. The UTP wire, which you need to connect to the adapter and the modem, is included in the package offered by UPC. The network adapter is NOT included. You can buy one at the Ludit PC-shop.
2. Multiple Connection
It is possile to connect more than 1 computer to the same cable
modem. You have to
install a HUB for this.
The HUB takes care of the network traffic between your PC's and the
cable modem.
You have to connect the cable modem to the HUB by using the cable you
get from UPC. You
connect the PC's with the HUB with ordinary UTP cables.
The HUB and the cables between the PC's and the HUB have to be bought.
You can buy them at the PC shop.
UTP cables are for sale in the PC-shop at a
length of 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 15 metres.
This service must be offered to students of the K.U.Leuven only.
