What You Need to Get Started: a dial-up account and a working modem on Windows 3.1(1) and the necessary software you can find below.
Step 1: Download your dialer and IP-stack
We use the Freeware Microsoft Internet Explorer with TCP/IP Stack and Dialer version 3.02a for connecting to KULeuvenNet. You can download it from here: here (3684 K). Save it in a local temporary directory. When you run the executable from within DOS or Windows (e.g.: c:\temp\dlbas30f.exe), the compressed file will be extracted to 11 new files. If you need to, you can make an installation copy on 3 diskettes now. Copy IEW31_3.CAB to your third diskette, copy IEW31_2.CAB to your second and all the rest (except your original dlbas30f.exe) to your first diskette. On another machine you can install the sofware then directly from diskette, or copy first everything again to a new c:\temp and install from there.
Step 2: Software Installation
Start setup from within Windows 3.1 by running the executable, by double clicking it from within your File Manager or by selecting the File / Run menu and then entering c:\temp\setup (suggested you extracted your files into c:\temp). Accept the license agreement and let the Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.02a Setup start by pressing OK. The setup will search for installed components and let it just install in the c:\iexplore directory, it will be created for you. Choose Complete installation by clicking once on the image in front of this and change the suggested Program Group to KULeuvenNet. When you have enough diskspace, installation will start.
The installation will try to install
your modem. So your modem needs to be connected by now.
Internet Explorer tries to detect your modem now, mostly it will
succeed, you can always fine-tune later. Otherwise you have to
select your modem manually, follow here the instructions on the
screen and consult your modem manual. If everything went well the
setup will warn you to restart your computer, so
go on and remove all diskettes.
Problems with your modem, please check our modem page first.
After rebooting, you can start Internet Explorer in your new KULeuvenNet group. Now we still have to wrestle with the Internet Connection Wizard. Take Manual as your Setup Option, otherwise you will never reach our dialin server. Enter KULeuvenNet as the name of the service provider (and we support PPP), give the dialer the phonenumber 016322820. Uncheck the Use Country and Area code and click next again. Now you have to type your User Name (m-, s- or u-number) and Password. The dialup Server will give you a dynamic IP-address, this means it could change every time you dial in, so don't enter one. What you do have to enter are these two DNS server addresses: 134.58.127.1 and 134.58.126.3 Select NO for Internet Mail and Internet News now, you can configure them later. Your configuration is complete now, place your icon in the KULeuvenNet group.
Step 3: Dialing in and getting connected
Double click your KULeuvenNet icon and you will get this screen.

Your User Name and Password have already been entered a while ago, so are your Phone number and location settings. Press Connect and your modem has to start dialing. Now these screens must appear:

and hope you'll finally get this.

Press disconnect if you ever want to hang up again.
When you dont get the last screen, but your Connecting to screen disappears, press ALT-TAB once or more to search for your connected to KULeuvenNet screen. So now we are online, you can already try Internet Explorer, first we are gone fine-tune our installation, then we are going to install more applications.
Step 4: Connection options
When we take the Connect To screen from step 3 and look under properties, we will find this:

Under the General tab we can find the location properties and phonenumber. You may uncheck the Start Internet Explorer when connected if you normally use other applications or another browser after connection. The Disconnect if idle for more than x minutes can be very useful to prevent astronomical phone bills, specially for quite forgetful people. Minimize connection status window is the connected to screen we found at the end of the previous step that will be shown or hidden. Enable dial on demand can be useful when you install other applications and you want to do something from there that needs your network-connection; your dialer will start and get you connected, before it switches back to your application. Bring up terminal window after dialing will serve those who have problems to connect, look at here for more info.
Take a look at the modem hardware configuration pages , for your optimal modem configuration.
Here are the TCP/IP settings, you have to follow:

Step 5: Configuring Internet Explorer

- under Connection, unmark Connect through a proxy server. KULeuven works with a complete transparent webcache.
